GALLERY 9: MARTYRDOM OF GURU ARJAN DEV

The growing influence of the Guru soon began to threaten the Mughals. The then Emperor Jahangir sent out a command that the Guru either be converted to Islam or else be subjected to Yasa (execution of a saint, whereby one's blood should not spill). Fearless of the consequence, the Guru refused to convert, for which Jahangir ordered for his arrest. Then began the most gruesome type of torture.

Oblivious of the brutalities which were being inflicted on him, the Guru continued to sing the verses of the Granth, "Whatever befalls on me I accept as the sweet gift of God." With this, he ascended to the heavens.
